What we fix

Start with what the door is doing

Nearly every call we take is one of these seven. Read the one that sounds like your door and call. If none of them fit, call anyway and tell us the noise.

Technician checking a garage door from inside a two-car garage

Garage door repair

A panel bowed in from a snowbank, rollers that squeal, a track that scrapes, a door that shudders halfway up. We find the part that wore out, replace it, and tune the rest of the door so it runs smooth again. Most of it gets done on the first trip.

Garage door spring repair and replacement

One loud crack from the garage, then a door the opener cannot budge. That is a torsion spring, and the first cold mornings here finish off a lot of them. We put on two new springs, balance the door, and look over the cables and rollers before we leave.

Garage door lift cable unwound from its drum above the track

Garage door cable repair

One corner of the door is higher than the other, or a cable is dangling beside the track. A frayed or unwound cable lets the door bind and can drop it. Leave the door where it is and call.

Off-track garage door repair

A car tapped the door, a roller split, or the track got knocked out of line, and now the door hangs cockeyed and will not move. We set it back in the track, replace the rollers, and straighten or swap the bent rail.

Garage door opener repair

The motor hums and the door does not budge. The door starts down, then climbs back up. Nothing at all after a July thunderstorm. Chewed gears, fogged photo eyes, and fried boards can all be fixed, and we tell you plainly when a new opener makes more sense.

A belt-drive or wall-mount opener with battery backup for the next ice storm outage, set up to your remotes, keypad, and cars before the truck leaves. Quiet enough that nobody upstairs hears it.

Rust eating the bottom section, split panels, or a builder door from the 1990s that has outlived two sets of springs. We measure the opening, order an insulated steel door built to fit, hang it with new springs, track, and weatherseal, and take the old one with us.

Why homeowners call us

No surprises in the driveway

  • The price comes first

The tech looks the door over, tells you what failed and what the fix costs, and waits for your yes. Nothing starts on a number you have not heard. There is never a service charge for the visit.

  • We fix the part that broke

A snapped cable is a cable job, not a new door. When a door really is at the end, we will say so and explain why, and the decision stays yours.

  • Two springs, never one

Both springs on a door have the same miles on them. Replace one and the other lets go within months. We do both on every spring call.

  • The parts ride on the truck

Springs, cables, rollers, hinges, bottom seals, opener gears, and photo eyes for the doors around here, including the odd single-car widths on West Side and North End garages.

Reviews

Our garage door opener would run for a few seconds then stop, but the door wouldn’t move. The technician from Derryfield Garage Doors arrived within an hour after we called them. He performed the repair after quickly discovering what the issue was, and the job was done well. We were happy with his professionalism and focus. We will definitely be calling them in the future for any garage door needs.

Jerry G., Amherst, NH

I had a garage door spring break and didn’t have a lot of time to get it fixed. I called Derryfield Garage Doors to get same-day service, and their technician was fast and reasonably priced. He explained how the system works and adjusted everything. All in all, very pleased with their work and I would use them again.

New Hampshire weather

Why garage doors fail in Manchester

A garage door is the largest thing in the house that moves, and it sits outside all year. New Hampshire winters are long, and every part of them works on the door. The first hard cold snap in December snaps torsion springs that were near the end anyway. Meltwater runs under the door on a warm afternoon and freezes the rubber seal to the slab overnight. The next morning the opener strains against the ice until it strips a gear or folds the bottom panel.

Manchester gets around five feet of snow in a normal winter, and a nor'easter can put a foot of it, wet and heavy, against the door in one night. Salt and brine off the highways ride into the garage on the car and eat the bottom brackets, hinges, and rollers first. Frost heave in March lifts the driveway edge and throws the door out of level. Summer brings thunderstorms that surge the opener board and humid nights that fog the photo eyes.

If the door is frozen down, stuck open, made a bang, or just started shaking on the way up, stop hitting the button. Call and tell us what you hear. We can usually name the problem before a truck leaves the shop.

Questions we get on the phone

Garage door repair questions, answered

  • How much does garage door repair cost?

It depends on what broke. A spring is one price, a cable set or a roller set is another, an opener board is another. The tech confirms the number in your driveway before starting, and you can say no. There is never a service charge for coming out.

  • My door goes down partway and comes back up. Why?

Nine times out of ten the photo eyes by the floor are blocked, dirty, or bumped out of line. A snowblower or a recycling bin is the usual culprit. If the door will not move at all, think spring, cable, or opener instead. Call and we will walk through it with you.

  • How long do torsion springs last?

They are rated by cycles, most around 10,000, which works out to seven to twelve years for a family that uses the door every day. A cold snap is what finally breaks them. If yours came with a house built in the 1990s, plan on it.

  • The door is frozen to the floor. Can I force it?

Do not. The opener will strip its gear or fold the bottom panel before the ice lets go. Turn the opener off and call. Freeing the door and fixing the seal so it stops happening is a normal winter call for us.

  • Do you work on old detached garages on the West Side?

Yes. Single-car doors in odd widths, tight driveways, and wood doors on garages from the 1920s in Rimmon Heights, Notre Dame, and the North End are regular work for us.
